Hebrews 10:14

Hebrews 10:14

For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.

Hebrews 10:14

This verse offers a tremendous amount of comfort and joy to the believer while at the same time concisely stating our standing with God.  Under the old covenant, sin was never purged nor forgotten (Hebrews 10:1-4).  However, through Christ’s singular sacrifice of Himself on the cross, we believers now have right standing with God forever (Hebrews 10:10). The first half of today’s verse reflects this standing, saying “For by one offering He has perfected forever.”  In terms of our righteousness before God, we stand blameless forever because of Jesus, and we are given the guarantee of the Holy Spirit as an assurance (Ephesians 1:14).

As we live our lives here in the flesh, we are going to stumble, yet this verse accounts for that by reminding us that we are “perfected forever,” while at the same time describing our current status as “those who are being sanctified.” God knows our weaknesses and frailties and He is working on us day by day to make us more Christ-like (2 Corinthians 4:16).  This work will not stop until we come face to face with Jesus (Philippians 1:6). That we are “being sanctified” encapsulates the truth that we are a work in process.  Our response is to allow the Lord to work daily in our life, and when we fall, we are to get back up and keep moving forward, free from guilt, because we have been perfected forever.
