Matthew 5:4
“Blessed are those who mourn, For they shall be comforted.”
Matthew 5:4
The above verse is not simply referring to those that sob over puppy commercials or cry at the drop of a hat because of some personal hurt. This refers to those that are truly sorry and mournful over sin — their own and that of the world. This is a deep sorrow, a passionate lament, or the anguish felt because of some event, condition, or circumstance that we see in ourselves or in the world around us.
Believers in a right relationship with God will mourn over the wrongs of our world and be grieved over the destruction caused by sin. As Paul wrote of himself, “O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?” (Romans 7:24). He truly mourned over his sinful state. But we can have confidence in knowing that these wrongs will be righted in the end and we will be comforted.
Mourning for the right reasons,
