Matthew 5:6

Matthew 5:6

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled.”

Matthew 5:6

Among all the beatitudes that Jesus gives at the start of His Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5, my favorite is this fourth one here. I think it is the one that the American church fails at the most. We hunger and thirst for all the wrong things: money, our own interests, worldly pleasures, entertainment. But we don’t hunger and thirst after what God wants.

God’s desire is for righteousness among His people. So we, as His people, should hunger and thirst for it as well. And if we do, Jesus says we will be blessed. This teaches us that blessing is found in righteousness.
