A message from the series “1 & 2 Kings 2005-2006.” After David’s death, Adonijah tries a backhanded attempt to seize the throne, but Solomon saw through his masquerade and had Adonijah executed fulfilling all the more of God’s prophetic words regarding David’s family. Additionally, Solomon followed David’s instructions of eliminating certain individuals who were threats to his reign. The greatest application in these chapters is when Solomon went to the Lord to ask for wisdom because he felt overwhelmed with the responsibility of governing God’s people. It was then that God commended Solomon for asking for wisdom rather than for riches. Solomon was then granted to have wisdom beyond anything that anyone has ever experienced.

Even though he had promised that one day Solomon would be king, another son, Adonijah, tried to usurp the throne by creating his own inaugural celebration. Word of this is taken to David wherein he instructs faithful Zadok to anoint Solomon and set him upon his throne. Once Solomon is crowned, Adonijah fears for his life, but Solomon extends mercy to him but with caution. The opening verses of chapter two contain David’s charge to his son Solomon to walk in God’s ways and keep His Word.

The believer too, facing a spiritual battle, must be armed with the reality of being saved and knowing that his sins for the past, present, and future were all dealt with at the cross.
