Proverbs 10:19

Proverbs 10:19

In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, But he who restrains his lips is wise.

Proverbs 10:19

For those that know me, this won’t be a shock, but my mouth has caused me so many problems during my life. I’m a bit of a smart aleck and have sometimes spoken without thinking. This verse is a reminder to me (and those readers who have the same malady) that it’s better to restrain our lips than to say something offensive.

In James 1:19, we are told to be swift to hear, but slow to speak. Jesus said in Matthew 15:18-19, But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies.

Jesus is our example of guarding our mouths. When He was on trial and could’ve defended Himself, He didn’t, despite the fact He was innocent.

Do you have a problem with speaking out of turn? Then pray with me that the Lord would help us restrain ourselves from saying sinful things.

Guard my tongue, Lord!
