Zechariah 8:16

Zechariah 8:16

“These are the things you shall do: speak each man the truth to his neighbor, give judgment in your gates for truth, justice, and peace.”

Zechariah 8:16

When the prophet Zechariah spoke these words, his intent was in line with the prophet Haggai. They knew the people needed a little encouragement and spiritual awakening if the temple was to be finished. Indifference, arguing, and just plain old disobedience was putting the Lord’s temple on hold and his words from the Lord resulted in the temple being completed. I would say the fire he lit under them burned them to their souls.

Often times, we find it easy to quarrel amongst ourselves and put off doing the right thing because, let’s be honest, sin just feels like the easiest way out. But those easy way outs will never fall in line with what God wants to accomplish for His kingdom. Nor will avoiding our responsibilities as Christians. The old Superman adage used to say “…For truth, justice, and the American way!” Maybe the writing department of that line read “truth and justice” in the Bible and slapped America on the end because it sounded good. Either way, our desires as believers should be that of truth, justice, and peace to one another. If we did just those things alone each day, imagine what we could be doing for God. And imagine how we would be flourishing as the people he designed us to be.
